The Hog’s Head PubCast is a recording of whenever Travis hangs out in Aberforth’s dingy bar and talks about Harry Potter. The podcast, started in 2006, has been a vital part of Harry Potter commentary at The Hog’s Head (formerly Sword of Gryffindor).

Economics: Goblins, banks, fractional reserves, Federal Reserve … next up on The Hogshead Pubcast, Travis interviews Ron Paul! Not being a businessman, I had not considered these ideas before. Once again, your insights are enlightening and fun. If Jo had written this while sitting in a coffee shop on the dole (and she did I believe), it is indeed a meaningful peek inside the animas of the author. Great episode.
Smart talk on Harry Potter, indeed! Engaging and thought provoking, yet accessible to mere mortals. Good motivation to go jogging in the morning with my iPod… and that’s saying something.
I can’t help but think Prof Granger misspoke when he said that the poor structural quality of Meyer’s writing made the irresistible content even more compelling and noteworthy. We all start out writing in one part (words plus ideas together) but gradually separate into structure and content parts. World Wide Web has now broken content away from structure as seen by the advancing use of CSS. Without structural integrity, ie good grammar and acceptable (understandable) syntax, Shakespeare might be Marlowe! Or Haydn might be Frescobaldi; or Mozart Salieri, etc.
For me, I find it normally not useful to conflate the two parts to generate a more favorable judgment of something: Leonardo’s Mona Lisa on a tee shirt is still the Mona Lisa; do you criticize it because it’s on a tee shirt? No, you might criticize the idea of putting great art images on tee shirts, but that’s criticizing something else entirely. I have not read more than a few pages of Meyer’s very popular series and am not competent to judge whether she is in the same league with Rowling. I have heard over and over, though, repeated reviews berating the style and quality of Meyer’s writing. Had her Twilight series not come on the heel of the Potter books closing, I doubt she would have had even a fraction of the attention she has garnered. None of this denigrates the symbolism and other cleverness that she built in to the Twilight stories. It just seems to me that in a comparison with Rowling, even in a topic as narrow as literary alchemy, Meyer will suffer. Compared to Dan Brown, though, perhaps …
Cheers!
Michael
This is a great Podcast, very insightful conversation both on HP and other books. A must listen for aspiring academics who are also Potter fans.
THE most insightful and enjoyable HP podcast out there!
If you’re interested in a great podcast not just about Harry Potter, but about the fantasy genre, you need to subscribe to the Hogshead Pubcast. Travis Prinzi puts together a podcast that is engaging and relevant to all fans of the Harry Potter series.
One of the best podcasts out there on Harry Potter. Insightful, well researched discussion of the books and other things relating to Harry Potter. Thought provoking and draws one into studying not only Harry Potter but other great literature as well.
Great podcast. Always good nuances and insights into all genres of literature, which keeps it very interesting and engaging. Thanks so much!
Real interesting! Thanks Travis. I am happy to hear you and Mr. Granger. Great podcast!
The Hog’s Head PubCast is just about the only podcast I regularly listen to, but needless to say I have learned a lot about great literature in general and about Harry Potter by listening to it, and by reading the hogshead.org articles. Great podcast, well worth the listening to, I almost always learn something interesting in each episode.
